NET Bible everywhere
We have talked here about the fact that the NET Bible is not that well known in the marketplace and what are some steps we could do over the next year?
I have been thinking a lot about this and here are my suggestions for discussion

1.We could begin a NET EVERYWHERE movement and start making tools and widgets that would allow users to have the NET on a cell phone, iphone, their website, their blogs and see what it would take to get a buzz and a viral movement started. (Do you think something like this would work?

2.We could take advantage that the NETBible is available for free in print form for anyone who wants to print it and give it away

2a.Perhaps we make a web page with all the chapters of the bible available for local printing and cut a deal locally and allow a person to print NETBIBLE chapters off their printer or put there credit card in the bible.org store and get chapters printed cheaply and sent off in a week or so?
We could possibly make the margins bigger and even a loose leave format so people could print them for a books study and write notes on them

3.Other ideas?? Do we need to set up a user group and friends of the net bible to make some local marketing material on why the NETBible? Perhaps we could write a short flyer comparing bibles. I see people in my Christian bookstore looking at the bible shelf and not knowing the difference between all the bibles on the shelf. We could write the comparisons and of course tell people about the 60,000+ footnotes that are the NET Bible distinctive.

Post your thoughts below and if you want to help write some flyers and maybe a fold out that we could print and make available to anyone who needs something to give someone looking for a bible let me know and I will support the formation of such a group.

David

I've noticed on CBD the readers edition is not available. Since it is not as expensive as the original NET Bible with translators notes, perhaps more people would order it. Another option would be to put it on sale and then it would attract more "sale hunters" attention. Just an idea for the frugally minded! Lorrie

The ESV Study Bible is pretty similar in its features and offerings (leater-bonded and genuine) to the NET Bible, except the ESVSB comes in hardcover edition.

So when will the NET bible have a hardcover edition?

David you mentioned the Christian bookstores. I think that's an important place that a push should be made. I actually have yet to see the NET in any bookstore, not one. marv, and you wont see it anytime soon unless God sends us an investor, as the retail bookstore channel discount is 50-60% and that would mean that we would be selling the NETBible at below our printer costs.. daustin (admin) I don't go to a lot but it's not in the ones I've looked at. It's kind of a people don't ask so the store doesn't stock so people aren't exposed to it.

I've never seen it at B Dalton either. Not to mention any of those big box stores with book sections.

In short, I think the NET just doesn't have much shelf space.

It would seem to me to target the bookstores it would take the production of promotional display materials. Something that gets the NET out there on the table with it's advantages spelled out for the shopper. Even a little sign that stick out on the shelf can make a huge difference. The bookstore wants books that sell. The more popular translations have gotten there by spending a lot on advertising over quite a few years. I doubt that's really in the budget, but it still needs to advertise someway. Something that catches the eye and gives some advantages to the shopper. agreed it takes a million + dollars to do a major retail launch of a bible. Clearly not in our budget or in our partners budget but you are right we can do a better job of advertising and creating posters telling people about its advantages etc and mini focused ad campaigns and even affiliate marketing. This is in the works and I expect it to be announced sometime in early 2009 ( I am pushing for Christmas sales) /s/ daustin (admin)

The Diglot could be targeted to those people teaching Greek. Get a professor to chose it as his preferred textbook. amen /s/ daustin

David,

At one of the Free Grace Bible Churches I follow, the Pastor gave it a plug and I think he used it from the pulpit. He even made a joke about trusting a Bible that calls itself
a Beta edition. ;-) They normally use NIV.

The plug from the pulpit would seem to be a very good tactic, IMO.

davidteh, a hard cover has been considered many times, but to date (because of the large page count in the first edition) in the print volumes we can afford, it doesnt save that much in cost over the leather. As a result we are looking at a hard cover pew bible (readers edition) that would be more price competitive with other hard cover bibles. To date we have not been able to afford that hard cover pew bible, Perhaps if there was enough demand we could presell 50% of the print order (say 10-20k units) allowing us to order twice as many to bring the print costs down to be competitive...
thanks for the question..

Hi David (A),

Thanks for the explanation!

When I read your words "(because of the large page count in the first edition)..."
I reacted mentally:
"that can't be, as the ESVSB has about the same page count and the hardcover edition is selling for US$27 at some places, which knocks 20 bucks off NET's bonded leather edition price".

Then I read:
"...in the print volumes we can afford"

Oh I see.....hmm........

I am stumped........
