A member of the Senate Armed Services Committee is joining other lawmakers in urging the Air Force to reverse a decision to strike a reference to God from a unit patch.

Senator Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi) has sent a letter to the secretary of the Air Force and the Air Force chief of staff about his concerns over the deletion of a reference to God from the U.S. Air Force Rapid Capability Office's (RCO) patch

I think Christians need to quit whining about this sort of thing.

First, it's hard to argue that having your religion affirmed on a military patch is not a form of special treatment.

Second, it's hard to argue that our military is doing "God's work." Frankly, Christians ought to be insulted by that as it's bordering on blasphemy, because our military actions are typically motivated by anything but Christ-like desires. At best, this is using God's name in vain.

So when you protest or advocate, are you whining?
Quote:
whine [hwahyn, wahyn] whined, whin·ing
verb (used without object)

1. to utter a low, usually nasal, complaining cry or sound, as from uneasiness, discontent, peevishness, etc.: The puppies were whining from hunger.
2. to snivel or complain in a peevish, self-pitying way: He is always whining about his problems.

Sometimes, yes. I would say that there's plenty of room for those two to coincide.

Dan,
The Nazi forces and extermination camp guards often wore the insignia Gott mit uns (God is with us). Seems ironic in hindsight.

That's true, but I think what people are really objecting to are the pervasive efforts to erase every acknowledgment of God in our society.

If you have served in the armed forces you would remember the unit patch represents the the people making the unit up as much as anything else. So what the unit motto stands for is the beliefs of the majority of those in the unit. We usually voted on the design and the motto when I was in when a new patch was needed. There were several designs and mottos suggested before the vote.

Regardless, they're agents of the government and ought not be promoting religion via their uniforms.

Oh, I know they think they're objecting to, but their fears are misplaced. Taking away the special treatment that Christians have enjoyed is not the same as wiping out all references to God. What these folks are unwittingly objecting to is the removal of religious piety and hypocrisy that would plaster "Jesus" on everything without having any real meaning behind it. In many, many cases, these symbols they fight to maintain are actually examples of taking the Lord's name in vain (in the original intent of that phrase).

In this particular case, the word some want to strike from the badge is "God", not "Jesus".

I'm protesting their current behavior and advocate for a different course of action. :P
