Greetings,
I noticed there hasn't been anything posted in this category since 2009, so thought I add something to keep this section active.

I fix and remove malware form computer on the side as a ministry (free).
I recently worked on a laptop that the owner had installed 3 real time antivirus programs, hoping that "more is better." Well these software were conflicting with each other.

So just kept one antivirus program and installed a new application that works with your current antivirus program:

http://www.immunet.com/
Its FREE.
Recommended by CNET.
Won't slow down your computer.
Fast, cloud based so no updates required.
Adds a layer of additional protection.
Compatible with all antivirus programs.

Trying it on my own computers, and installed on my clients computers.

Loco,

This is true. Never have more than one TSR anti-virus program running at a time. All sorts of problems can arise. This is easier said than done as many apps have a TSR option and they don't like being disabled. I recommend AVG anti virus as equal or better than the pay TSR (terminate and stay resident) apps. Macafe and even Nortn' have been sometimes classified as PUP (possible unwanted software) - as I understand it - it because of a reluctance to disinstall for the competition.. You still need stand alone scanners for malware and rootkits!

While AVG is mainly a memory resident anti viral, it has some malware and rootkit features. I'm not familiar with your recommended app., though I can recommend:

Ad-Aware - free malware and anti rootkit scanner. It will TRY to install itself as a TSR too. If this happens, disable this so it is a stand alone scanner.

Spy-bot Search and Destroy -- This too has a TSR feature but is easy to configure as a stand alone scanner and TSR is not a default, as I recall. A GREAT feature is the immunization option. It is passive and inoculates Firefox and Windows from attack using registry features only (no wasted memory conflics)...

Malware Bytes Anti Malware-- The simplest off all: it has no TSR feature. Easy and stand alone.

All of these are freeware.

Search Wiki and Google for terms like rootkit and malware, and to find the home page to download. These have all been around for many years now. ;-)

PS

TSR is an old term. Substitute "memory resident."
:-)

Hello Serendipity,
Thanks for your feedback.
I am familiar with AVG, yes some of the top free security applicants do work well quite well.
Others besides AVG; AVAST, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira Personal, Panda Cloud are other free software that I recommend.

Immunet is not a stand alone software.
It was designed to work with your main security software (whatever you use).
Note: During the installation, you can install the optional Clam Antivirus to make Immunet a stand alone program - but the Clam antivirus is not that good, it is a open source application).
As I mentioned, I am trying this program out myself, it adds an extra layer of protection to your current antivirus program.

Yes I agree you need to have scanners and do your weekly maintenance.
Malware Bytes Anti-malware is one of the best scanners.
I have tried Ad-Aware and Spybot myself.
Another great scanner is the Superantispyware (free version).

As you know, the best way to catch these malware is to go into Safe Mode (F8).
Because only the necessary drivers and files are used, so most of these malware are lying dormant awaiting to be destroyed (like little demons).

God Bless!

I use SuperantiSpyware and MalwareBytes for removing viruses on other other people's machines.

On my own computers I use Comodo, and manually scan with the other two occasionally. Comodo works pretty nicely, but it requires 'training' with some of my programs.

I have tried Comodo Internet Security Free.
For a free program it has features others don't have:
Firewall, sandboxing technology to name a few.
On one test, it actually did as good as some of the paid software.

Only thing though, you have to set the firewall to the highest level of security to get maximum protection. One of my clients complained about to many pop ups. I did mention that as the firewall remembers some of the programs, pop ups should get less. But because of the sensitivity of the HIPS, anything that resembles a malware will generate a message pop up. The only way to reduce this is to set the security level lower. The drawback is your protection level is also lowered. So have to decide what you want.

He ended up uninstalling Comodo and is trying Panda Cloud antivirus, which works very quietly in the background (doesn't need daily updates because of the cloud). And use the Windows 7 firewall, which is much better than the earlier windows firewall. So far he is satisfied.

But I still like what Comodo offers, I did have it on one of my spare laptops, but the HD failed so I haven't decided if it is worth replacing it at this time.

Just thankful there are free stuff to use.
