never touch a child even in innocence this may be innocent but you never know.

I think this is an unrealistic rule. When you are dealing in child-care There are times when "touching" is a necessity. For instance, changing diapers and or cleaning up around an "accident" when a toddler is potty training.

IMO background checks are a must and minimizing one-on-one contact alone with children.

Even when a church is diligent evil can strike. It is the world we live in.

Blessings,
Randy

I will suggest a backgroud check in my church of sunday school teachers. I think that's right thing to do.

Yes, yes, and more yes!

It is our responsibility to protect the flock and to edify the congregation, yes? When someone is being divisive and will not cease, do we not discipline them by removing them from the flock? We do this not only to prompt repentance, but also to protect the church from their influence for a time. If a background reveals inappropriate behavior toward a child, I cannot put them into Children's Ministry and if they have served time for embezzling, I won't make them the Church Treasurer. This is only reasonable behavior. It is common practice among employers, and it can be done without being overly intrusive.

My wife and I did 25 years in inner city ministry. In order for anyone to come on staff, a criminal background check was always mandatory. In the same breath, we also did 10 years of foster care, and the agency we worked for required a criminal background check every 2 years.

It's just the smart thing to do these days. It protects you legally and it protects children in the congregation, and it protects those to whom you may be ministering who may not be Christian (we helped run a soup kitchen, food pantry, clothing ministry)....
