Books about teenagers that don't do drugs, (well, a potion now and again) are not sexually active, and don't throw the "F" bomb around like candy. As long as kids know the books are fiction, not reality, there is no harm, and quite a bit of good role modeling. Not perfect, but good.

I predict that there is going to be a whole generation of kids that read better than some of the earlier vintages because of these books.

They are fiction...children old enough to tackle them are very cognitive that they are reading a made-up story, especially if coached by an adult.

I finally read them this summer. Devoured all seven in just three weeks. I haven't seen the movies yet.

People who are aghast that the characters are witches and wizards but see no problem with Narnia or The Hobbit series really need to quit with the hypocrisy, IMHO.

sure -- some i've talked to view the 3 as increasing levels of "danger" -- some enjoy all 3 -- so what about those who see issues w/ all 3?

I think it's fine for people to express a personal conviction they have had pressed upon them by the Lord BUT I do not think it's fine to create a rule for everyone based off a personal conviction. We should be motivated by love not by fear... we should not make up legalistic rules and try to pass them off as Gospel simply because we fear what we are ignorant of and are ignorant of what is true. In this case, reading Harry Potter will no more make you join the occult as entering a liquor store will automatically make you an alcoholic.

reebz -- i generally agree -- sometimes people race to "save" everyone before thinking -- sometimes the reasons are pure & noble, other times they may be based on some emotional scar -- we're not always tactfully loving when faced with something different

1 Cor. 13:1 -- If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

you'd could retire on the winnings if this were a bet -- but, just like the 2 green #s on the roulette wheel, there are exceptions out there -- some people become addicted after 1 attempt -- so we must all be vigilant, networked to fellow believers, & in prayer

I agree with this but we should not be vigilant in being a Spirit of conviction for others. One may have not trouble in a drink or two while another best not drink one. One may be pulled into the occult by such books while another sees only a fictional story. We should all stand firm together where the Lord Biblically identifies sin (drunkeness, glottony, adultery, etc.). IMHO where the Lord gives liberty it is not ours to take away.

I agree with this completely.
