Having been raised a Christian, attended a Baptist College for a semester and a Baptist Middle School, you'd think I'd be a whiz at memorizing scripture. Oh contrare, mon ami! I have always struggled with memorization, even way back in Jr. High. It's just something that does not come naturally to me, but I am determined to put on the armor of God and memorize as much as I can.

I've been working on a good base of scripture to memorize and have come to a bit of a bump in the road. Not with what to memorize, I've got no problems figuring that out right now, but with how to mentally store these verses and be able to recall them. I'm to the point where they are becoming jumbled up in my head. If I see the reference, I can spout off the verse, but I'm having a hard time mentally filing all of the verses in a place that I can recall them.

I don't have the best short-term memory in the world and work with a 'pegs' system to hang bits of information on, which really helps a LOT. I'm considering 'building' a place in my head to file the verses I learn by topic, but I fear this will soon become over burdened in my head as well.

If anyone has any ideas or specific strategies, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks,

Nimrod

Yeah I have trouble with Scripture Memorization, once I couldn't recall a psalm I memorized (and even shared) a week later.

For me the key is to rely on the Spirit and not to put guilt/pressure on myself for trying to be the "memorization king". As I'm reading the bible sometimes the Spirit will lead me to meditate on certain passages and out will come the memory -- naturally. Other things that help me memorize was to watch movies (e.g: Gospel of John) that illustrate the verses or remember the context of the chapters (e.g: John 3 = Jesus and Nicodemus = What it means to be born again, 1 Corinthaians 13 = Love Chapter ). I'm better at memorizing the general idea of a chapter and then I can fish for the verses with the help of a bible.

You may want to try the old-fashioned way: flash cards. On one side of a card you put a Bible verse by book & number; on the other side you write out the quote. After you have hundreds of these cards, shuffle them up and go through them either on the quote side, or on the book & verse number side, or mix them up haphazardly.

It works for me. Very well.

Roger

I personally just read, read, read a passage/verse/whatever. Then I study it, study it, study it. And while doing all of this I pray it in different ways and try to discuss it with others, meditate on it when I'm laying in bed, showering, driving, etc. I find that by doing this I have actually incorporated it more and more into my life and faith rather than just being able to parrot some quote, I've tried to learn it by applying it and allowing it to shape my very thinking and actions. Not that I ever do this perfectly or anything like this, but I've found it to be the most effective way for me to allow the Scriptures to penetrate and saturate my life.

I go along with Roger. The Navigators have long had their "Topical Memory System", a set of business card sized flash cards. On each card is a topic, followed by the reference, followed by the verse, followed by the reference again, e.g.,

Quote:
All Have Sinned
Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23

You can purchase their system, but if you are serious about memorization, you will soon want to add your own. You can get blank business cards on a perforated 8.5"X11" sheet at Office Max or elsewhere. Make up your own topics and find the verses. With TMS, the topics are not random, but follow a bigger subject, e.g., the plan of salvation.

Regards.

Oh yes... I'm a HUGE fan of 3X5 cards for any kind of study. :) I currently have a good number of verses that I carry around with me on cards and I can shuffle through them fairly well. I'll have to do a bit of research on a topical index. Thanks all for the tips.

In Christ,

Nimrod

Perhaps you will also find that the KJV grammatical style is far easier to memorize as it is not the type language you would use every day and may 'stick out' in your mind a little better.
