Does news of Australia get on the US airways?

Just a few months ago most of our nation was in the depths of one of the worst droughts on record - now a look at a map makes it appear as if we are disappearing under water.

Three quarters of Queensland ... one of our biggest states, northeast on the continent ... is currently affected by floods and the waters are still rising. Hundreds of thousands of people are directly affected. Whole towns have been evacuated. The state capital of Brisbane is facing the peak today when high tides and flood waters meet.

The flooding extends down into New South Wales as coastal river systems are flooding there too. Inland river systems are beginning to get the water flowing down from Queensland, and those systems are largely still clogged from heavy rains at the end of 2010. Victoria had major flooding then too. All of those areas will now get more water until the river system empties into the ocean, via the Darling and Murray rivers, in South Australia. In effect, that means the eastern half of the continent is either under water or about to be.

This weather map and associated links might help:

Please remember to pray for the people who have lost loved ones - 90 missing, 10 confirmed dead; those who have lost farms and businesses; those left homeless; the thousands of SES volunteers, police, army, ambulance workers working nonstop; the long haul to come in clean up and recovery. Thanks for the generosity of people in the rest of the nation as flood appeals start to raise some of the many millions of dollars that will be needed to rebuild Queensland.

We have a number of members here from Queensland. I pray that they are safe, calm, and filled with the peace of God despite their circumstances.

A newsreader also just remarked that the area directly affected in Queensland is bigger than the size of Texas - that might help those of you in the USA in understanding the extent of this crisis.

Maybe a more accessible place for information:

Generally not, but this is an exception. There are minor updates, but nothing like the urgency in Australia, of course. I try to follow on the BBC included with Firefox.
Prayers to everyone affected. Keep us posted.

Hi Avid worse is yet to come here in Brisbane, tonight 0300 seems to be a time for further disaster, when the wave hits after passing through Ipswich. Thank God I am on higher ground yet those poor folk at Toowoomba would have thought the same so who knows.

My prayers, for all of us... - - Weather wise.....

La Nina is in full force. What La Nina is, is winds, blowing on the Pacific - - from East to West. The top-warm water then tends to flow to the West - - causing floods in Australia/SE Asia. Last time this happened, was 2007, at which time Rice got short from the flooding.
As cool water then is next to the Americas - - it tends to cause cold weather, and droughts in the Southern US, and in Argentina and Brazil. Typically, the water cools .5 degrees during an La Nina. This time, because of the added influence of the Pacific Decelade Oscillation and the Volcano's erupting in E Russia, the water temp has dropped 3.5 degrees. This then has messed up the Jet Stream - - causing all these East Coast Blizzards.

May you live, in interesting times.

Bert

I had heard some news, Sally, but didn't know how serious it was. I'll be praying.

Thank you Sally for the updates. Our prayers are with all of those who are facing such troubles. I had heard only a little about this flooding, but as in all things...when it is far away from you...it just doesn't seem to "hit home" (so to speak)...but when friends are affected and ask for prayer...it suddenly hits home. So thank you for sharing with us.

Praying for y'all in Oz. May the strong hand of the Lord of Host protect the innocent and bring salvation to the lost. In the name of the Lord, may the waters obey Him and quiet down the ocean as it obey Him some time ago.

My prayers, especially to those affected by the flood.

I have an aunt in Brisbane and we're still trying to contact her. Hope she and her family will just be fine.

Hi folks,
I live in Toowoomba which is one of the cities hit by the floods. to give you come idea of the extent of the flood affected areas:
The land area that has now been declared as a disaster area is over 500,000 square miles, which is roughly double the size of Texas. And that's just Queensland, not including the areas in New South Wales currently going under water.

For the Europeans, that's roughly the size of France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium and Netherlands combined.

Thanks for your prayers.

finally heard from my aunt, thank God they're ok

here goes her update:

"Hello Gi,

Thank you so much for you concern about us. Yes, we are flooded here and has been raining all over Queensland for weeks now and finally hit the capital of Queensland...Brisbane. It is not over yet expecting for the water to peak tomorrow at 4AM. Heaps of people lost their homes and everything just the clothes they are wearing and there was no time to spare they just run. In the town of Towoomba it was an inland tsunami it was so scary looking on the footage of what people experienced. Where Telly's office is in which not far from the Brisbane river, they were sent home yesterday after an hour of arriving to their office. No office today too there was no power supply. Don't know yet if they are going to work tomorrow either. At my work place the bistro was closed yesterday as the chef can not get through to the Island and the road to the Island was flooded and no supply can be delivered. Only two of us working yesterday as the coffee shop was opened for the day.

Our shopping centre ..Morayfield, was flooded so we are not going their this week just in case the road is blocked. Roads will be covered in pot holes everywhere I guess so bad for the car.

Where we are and also Telly, we are all ok..thank God!!!! Please Gi tell them at home that we are OK...
"

we'll continue our prayers then...
