It's funny to me in a way how things change over the years. We go from when meat is a luxury and so giving it up was a form of fasting. To today when you see the modern form of it where people won't eat a dollar fast food burger so they go out and eat $25 lobster instead. Somehow that doesn't really seem to me to be giving up anything.

Or you still have people who eat pancakes on Fat Tuesday. Since the consumption of fat was also a luxury people would give it up for Lent, so the day before Lent they would feast. A traditional luxurious feast was pancakes. Somehow I don't think today we generally think of pancakes as luxury.
