Hi there,

I'm new to this online community, so I hope I'm posting this request in the correct place. If not, please let me know.

I am a student at Concordia University in Montreal, and this year I am writing a paper on the event known as the Great Disappointment and the Millerite movement. I am having a lot of trouble getting books and scholarly articles that can assist me in creating a thorough description of the event. I specifically wish to discuss the event itself from an historical perspective. The paper is not a comment on the Rapture as a concept and my thesis does not argue for or against the validity of any evangelical beliefs. I am immensely curious about this particular group and the effect the Millerites had on creating a new denomination after the Great Disappointment.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would very much appreciate it. I've seen one or two books out there that might help, however they are often not in libraries. If anyone knows of biblical libraries or shops in the Montreal area, that too would be of immense value to me.

Finally, any pastors or biblical scholars who would be willing to comment or share their own work to which I could refer would of course be invaluable.

thanks so much,

freshwatermermaid

To place the man and the movement in the context of their time and location, you might find these interesting:

Freedom's Ferment by Alice Felt Tyler
The Burned Over District By Whitney R. Cross

Both are older works. The former isn't particularly flattering to the people involved. The latter attempts to explain the movement in terms of the frontier thesis (I don't know whether you're a history major, but if you are and you have studied Canadian or American history, then you have probably studied the frontier thesis).

A couple of more modern works also include information on Miller and the Great Disappointment from a historical perspective:

Thunder and Trumpets by David Rowe
The Miller Heresy, Milleniallism and American Culture by Ruth Alden Doan

The American Society of Church History publishes a journal called Church History Journal. You might check to see if Concordia's library carries it. You can google the name to find its home page on the Web. However, I'm not sure if the site offers an index or accessibility to any of its past issues.

May you do well and prosper at your studies at Concordia, fwm!

Thanks so much for the help from everyone. I hand in the paper on Tuesday and I hope I've done justice to the story. Many accounts were quite contradictory concerning the actual events, some even seemed tabloid in nature. I think I've been able to cobble together a decent picture of this event and I hope I've portrayed it well.

I really appreciate the responses from everyone.

cheers,
Julia

How about the 7th day Adventist Commentary in the book of Daniel, Volume 4 or 7.

But I am more interested what we need to learn from you. I'm very surprised someone is interested about William Miller especially after the Great Disappointment, Was it really a disappointment or was Mr. Miller telling us that there is way to figure out the end? Everyone , every religions and around the world were involved searching for the end time, Newton, Martin Luther, etc..., but in 1867 or so, finding the end time just completely stop! Three times Jesus caught his disciples while praying at the Garden of Gethsename sleeping, we can't even watch for an hour. Mark 14:37-41.

< 300 years to go, Amen.
