Incidentally (!), Rev. 2:17 has always read to me as if the new name applies to the one receiving it, not to Jesus...

Exactly! And it is Christians who are the ones receiving it. That was the point of my paraphrase of that and all similar promises given at the ends of each of the letters to the churches.

"The name from the outside is not nearly more important than what is on the inside."

Unable to do much typing I borrow the words of kolabok21 which very suitable in studying the new name as being reveal in Romans 10:8-9

I agree. The external name is more of a label, but the internal name is the new me that only God perceives with me.

Thank you VB, for the kind and generous thought. As I read through the posts, it wandered effortlessly away to all the things that should have pointed to the truth, whether 2 millennia ago or in the present. Namely to borrow a pun, a change in name for followers of Christ, again pointing to the redemption of the individual, saved…

This is an interesting study you've done on the word name. It is fascinating to see the number of names God (Jesus) has in the OT and in the NT. The OT Hebrew has many names for God and the Messiah which are not always evident in the English.
The word new in is the Greek word kainos which means something that is unique and unprecedented in its quality.

God really made transliteration of names multiple times as e.g. Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sara or Sarah, Jacob to Israel.
Isaiah 62:2 And the Gentiles shall see the righteousness, and all the kings the glory and thou shalt be called by a new name, with the mouth of the LORD shall name. I think this refer to Jesus which inherited an excellent name Hebrews 1:4
Being said inherited confirm to what Jesus said in John 5:43 I am comes in my Father's name, and ye received me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
Jesus promised to those who shall overcome that he shall also give Rev 2:17 & Rev 3:17.

Isaiah 56:5 Even unto them I will give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting names, that shall not be cut off. parallel to John 14:2-3

All scripture are NKJV unless otherwise indicated.
