This might seem like the most ridiculous question of all... but I was wondering if people could write how they know for certain that there is a God. I am a believer and not interested in the regular arguments for nonbelievers but I really think everyone has their own individual stories on how they just know...

How do you know there is a God?

For me, growing up seeing healings and miracles made it impossible to disbelieve in God. Also, very accurate words of knowledge and prophecy.

Anyone who knows for sure is already dead.
Quote:
11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

When I think of the existence of God two questions come to mind. First, where did we get the idea of right and wrong from, where did we get the idea of fairness and the need for morality? Second, to say that you know there is no God means that you know every corner and cranny of the universe - you would have to an infinite being to know if He exists.

If God would be easily explained by humans He would not be a true infinite God. He has made himself known to man but yet we do not understand all there is about God.

I believed that God existed before I knew, but now I know he exists because I know him.

It is a good question.

Another reason I believe in God is because the Bible's history fits what we can observe.

For example, population growth. Earth's low population fits with the near extinction of Noah's flood about 4300 years ago. The tower of Babel gives us a reason for the origin of languages. Noah's flood gives us a reason why marine fossils have been found all over the world including on deserts and near the tops of mountains.

Because the history of the Bible is trust worthy, I find the Bible's description of God is trust worthy.

Theophilus,

Yes, I agree... I don't understand when people get so worked up about creationalism vs. darwinism.. to me, science fits into the bible... or the bible fits into science or however you want to see it. I don't see them as against one another but that everything we know scientifically fits into what the bible says...

Prophecy. Prophecy is proof that God exists. There are many prophecies in the OT, many about Christ. In the Dead Sea Scrolls there was found a copy of Isaiah which has been show to pre-date the birth of Christ. So, we have evidence that these prophecies were made before Christ was born and as we see they've come to fruition.

Think for this answer someone like a Karl barth had the right take...

Look to jesus, for IF he was and is as claimed, that proves God is real and with us!

Yes, I think the prophesies do prove it as do miracles in the bible and even miracles that still happen today... but these things help unbelievers and re-establish faith for believers... what really drove this question though is wanting to know personal connections that members on this forum have with God... of course maybe it's none of my business but the way God connects and let's me know He is with me (I've heard other people describe little coincidences they have in their lives that they know that God is guiding them, encouraging them or just thinking of them as "God winks  ) This happens to me sometimes and the connection just makes me so happy and I love to hear stories from others...

to me it comes down to these personal stories and experiences (through miracles, signs or small "God winks") that after you understand and believe that God is real, you know it because God shows you in some personal way... I love Gideon's response:

"I believed that God existed before I knew, but now I know he exists because I know him."

I take it back to the very person of Jesus... ALL of God was in Him, as he was/is God incarnated with us, so IF He himself is real, THAT by itself is sufficient to hold to there being a God!
