Is there a group on this forum that memorizes the bible? I am currently putting to memory books of the new testament (by the grace of God) and i am desiring to work with those who are doing the same....for accountability, for help, for support and encouragement. I am new to these types of forums and so i'm probably not following protocol but i hope you can help me.

Hi there Baxter
To my knowledge there is no group on the forum working on that particular subject. However, that being said, I am working with a young fella who is memorizing scripture and he lives in a different city than I do. I am memorizing Philippians. We listen to each other over skype. I am wondering if we might get a crew/group together here on the forum that might like to do that as well. Hopefully your note and my reply might energize someone who comes to the forum to respond to one of us about this possibility.

Ideas fellow forum-ers?

I don't understand all of the posts you entered but I will deal with your question about Bible memory and verse memorization. I memorize scripture the "old fashioned" way. I put a verse on a 3x5 card and recite it out loud until I memorize it. I choose verses that speak to me where I am at spiritually.

My wife and I are putting one or two verse phrases on 3 X 5 cards and memorizing them together. The first 11 verses were from a series of books that emphasized memorization of scripture. I can't remember the name of the books offhand. I guess that says something about my memory.

We've added about 9 more from a discipleship course my wife took.

At first I thought we were too old to be committing verses to memory, but it's been working out pretty well. And we take turns quizzing each other.

Age can be a factor, but I can say at age 50, I am still trying to memorize verses but it does take longer than it did when I was in high school as a student. During my four years in high school (1976-1980) I memorized about 500 verses and some I remember to this day but not all by any means.

I found this very interesting: The Easiest Way to Memorize the Bible: What I Learned from Dr. John Mitchell

Ken Berding wrote:
One of my professors in college was really old. I can hear everyone asking: “How old was he?” (No, his social security number wasn’t 7…). Let’s put it this way: he was the founder of the college at which I was studying (Multnomah in Portland, Oregon), and the school was celebrating the half century mark of its founding while I was there! In fact, Dr. John Mitchell was over the age of 90 when he taught the two classes I took from him. He continued to teach well into his mid-90s. Not surprisingly, he was getting forgetful about some things by the time I had him as a teacher, but what he definitely was not forgetting were the Bible verses he had memorized. His ability to recall Bible verses was astounding. I do not know this for a fact, but I would guess that he had all of the New Testament and large sections of the Old Testament committed to memory. All of his students were profoundly impacted by his immersion in the Scriptures.

I only had one opportunity to sit and talk with him while I was a student. I had a single question to ask him that day: “How did you come to memorize so much of the Bible?”

Interesting article thank you for posting it. I used a system back when I was in high school I think it was called the Navigators system. It was pretty effective.

We always put the verses to music :) I learned 1 John 4:7-8 when I was 4 and I still remember the verse (and the tune) to this day!
