Hey, I'm new to the forum! Just had a question for ya'll in here...Does anyone have any good advice on a reference book or dictionary that one could use to translate Scripture back to Greek or Hebrew and get the meanings?

I have a 4 volume set, Wuest's Word Studies in the Greek New Testament, and I love it, but it doesnt have all the books of the NT. I'm looking for something with a good exegetical break down of the text with the Greek to English translations.

Anyone have any ideas?

You could try an interlinear for comparing English with the original languages. This downloadable interlinear is pretty good. Also a lexicon like BDAG is the best for word meanings.

Translating the English back to Greek just puts another layer of interference between you and the original, but William Mounce wrote Interlinear for the Rest of Us" published by Zondervan.

I also enjoyed Wuest as a young minister - writes well - you will find that the grammar is a little more flexible in places.

Hi Wes, and welcome to the forum! While I'm sure it's not quite what you're looking for, have you checked out the NET Learning Environment? It includes the NET Bible with thousands of translators' notes and study notes, a composite Bible Study Dictionary, word studies, and scripture texts in the original languages with Strong's numbers, popup definitions & syntax notes (e.g. John 3:16), and more. Its aim is to be the most powerful online Bible study resource and I think it is. Here's the Feature List and here's the Help Page with tutorial videos.

Thanks guys for the replies! Those are great options that I was not aware of... I really enjoy the wuest word studies volumes that I have, I just wish that it contained more books of the new testament. Here is an example of what I am looking for....

Say I was going to preach on Galatians 5:16..."But I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." What tool could I use to look that text up and get a good sound exegetical break down on what is being said there. I know the obvious meaning, and my own interpretation, but I would like to see how that would translate to the Greek and what the meaning of those words are. I am currently in a theological program, but have not had any training on Greek or Hebrew...

There are commentaries on the Greek text of every NT book. I quickly read 5 commentaries - and Longenecker, Bruce, and Fung would have been of help to you.

Since you speak of preaching, I would suggest that you purchase a serious commentary covering the book upon which you are preaching - you may be able to borrow some from libraries or other ministers. (If you break the spine or spill coffee - buy the guy a new one.)

There are some older sets like Alford that would be of some help to you, but we know so much more about NT Greek that we did when Alford wrote. In fact there has been significant progress since Wuest wrote as well - though few wrote as interestingly as he.
