A pastor once told me that there is a single word in Hebrew that can mean either "wait" or "hope", depending on the context.

He had been preaching on how blessed it is to wait upon the Lord. I can't remember the scripture reference, but I think it's in Isaiah.

I had my bilingual bible (English/Spanish) with me, and I mentioned to him that the same verb in Spanish can mean "wait" or "hope" depending on the context. (The verb is "esperar"). He replied, "Hebrew has the same thing".

I find this remarkable. Hebrew is a semitic language, while Spanish is a romance language. Not closely related.

English speakers might do well to ponder on the relationship between waiting and hoping. Especially if you're the impatient type.

another verse; Psalm 130:5 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. (KJV)

Strider 33, according to "Wilson's Old Testament Word Studies," he has the word yachal as the word for hope and wait. The reference for hope is on p. 222 and the word for wait on p. 470. The verse listed for Isa. with this word is Isa. 42:4 "He will not be disheartened or crushed until He has established justice in the earth; and the coast-lands will wait expectantly for His law." NASB

My transliteration may not be the best but it is yod, qames hatuph, het, pathah, lamed.

According to Wilson both definitions read the same and state "to wait, to hope; importing, properly, a long and patient waiting; a lingering hope, still expecting and earnestly desiring..."

The number in Strong's is 3176, if you have a Strong's concordance this number would be for the Hebrew & Chaldee words in the back.
