At one time, God delivered the children of Israel into the hand of Midian for seven years because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord. The Midianites treated them very poorly and even the Amalekites came against them and destroyed all the sheep, oxen and asses leaving Israel greatly impoverished.

When the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, He sent a prophet who told them why the Lord had done this.

Then the Lord sent an angel to Gideon, son of Joash the Abiezrite. Gideon asked the angel why , if the Lord was with them, did He allow all that had happened to them happen. Then the Lord told Gideon that he would save Israel from the Midianites as one man.

Gideon wanted a sign to show that he had found grace in his Lord's sight.

What was he told to do and what happened next?

Dew to be on the fleece (or dew to be off the fleece)?? (As I recall, when God answered his first request for verification, he thought, "Naw, that's just a coincidence." So then he asked God for a second sign opposite the first. Sounds eerily familiar, does it not??)

I'm going to submit my answer before I look up the correct answer. Here goes.

Regards.

Nope, I was a few verses ahead of myself.

Judges 6
Quote:
17So Gideon said to Him, "If now I have found favor in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who speak with me. 18"Please do not depart from here, until I come back to You, and bring out my offering and lay it before You." And He said, "I will remain until you return." 19Then Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened bread from an ephah of flour; he put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, and brought them out to him under the oak and presented them. 20The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And he did so. 21Then the angel of the LORD put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.

Regards.

I guess that as God was using prophets in those days to speak with people instead of Him, some of them questioned what they were told and that's probably why the early people (Jewish) always wanted a 'sign.'
