If you are computer savy, please say "I". I need to find a way to transfer from win98 to a lenux os. The problem is this; I am running dial up, I have no burner (cd or dvd) and cant afford one, I do have a 4gig flash stick and access to a faster unit (at work). Basicly I need to get as up to date as I can with no money. Any advise other than going into debt for a new system?

Umm I have no idea, why not google for the info as I am sure you would find the best way there rather than here

I'm not a "savvy", just a layman, but I try my best.

If you want to download Ubuntu, one of the most popular Linux operating systems, you have to insert in any case at least a CD on your disk drive otherwise the download will not work. I've just tried it. As soon as you insert a disk the Ubuntu-download program moves on.

Ubuntu 10.10, the latest version, covers 693 MB and fits barely on a CD (700 MB space). With a dial-up connection it will take you ages to get it downloaded. Fortunately you can get it with the aid of the computer at your place of work, which obviously has a faster internet-connection. But even there you seem to need a CD-writer.

Under item 2 on the above-mentioned site you can even create a USB-drive! But I don't have any experiences with this. So you have to try that out on your own, download Ubuntu via work-computer on the stick and get it somehow started on your PC. Maybe the download-site gives you helping advice.

If that doesn't work then get a CD-writer, which can be bought for about $50 or less at Amazon. This shouldn't run you too deep into debt, right?

Perhaps there are better advices out there ...

Hi ummm_me,

Going from Win 98 to Linux might get your OS updated, but that doesn't mean you'll be any more productive. For starters, you'll probably find yourself unable to run any of the applications that you now have running on the Win 98 OS. And, although Linux apps are readily available, it'll take time to learn them. Plus, if you're used to working with Microsoft Office apps (eg Word, Excel), or even Microsoft Works, you'll find the Linux apps are generally not fully compatible with the Microsoft prodcuts.

Aside from age and lack of ongoing support, what is it about Win 98 that you believe a change to Linux will address?

@ummm_me:

I can give you another "small" advice, which I learned from a good German newspaper and which helped me much.

Get the free ccleaner-program which clears all dust from your hard disc you constantly produce when using your computer. For downloading don't use the thick green button (you have to pay) but the thin green link below. There are several proxy servers where you can get it. You will be marvelling at how much dust (several MBs) you produce every day, which block your disk and slow down your computer.

Besides, use at least once a week the defragmentation program which is part of the Windows Operating System. To find it start the support and help center of your Windows.

Hopefully these hints can help you getting your Win98 run faster - and make you happier!

I think you also need to factor hardware limitations. If your machine is really really old, it doesn't even matter if you upgrade to the latest OS, it will either not meet minimum requirements, or it will be a very slow experience. If you have anything less than a Pentium-3 (<600 MHZ), or you don't have enough RAM (<128 MB) then you probably will be stuck in the world of Windows 98.

Going along with what Frenzy said - if you attempt to re-install to a Linux OS (Ubuntu, Red Hat) then you will need a copy of it on a CD/DVD.

I don't think you'll find any full-blown version of Linux that will run on the hardware you describe. And, the stripped down versions are likely not to be an improvement over win-98.

I did convert an older XP box to Vector Linux. It was the only full-blown Linux version I found that had reasonable performance on the hardware. But even that would be too much for your hardware.

You might try some of the live-cd versions of Linux. Load them on your USB drive and boot from the USB drive. Puppy Linux, for example, might be an option (google "puppy linux alternatives" to find some others). But, I don't think you'll be happy with the results.

The other thing you might do is just start asking around to see if anyone has an old XP computer tower they would trade out for something else (or even give you). They're impossible to sell, and even if you can sell them you can't even get $100 bucks. Look around the house and see if you've got anything you want to get rid of, and start using it for trade bait.

If someone has moved on to the latest/greatest PC and has an old XP or Visa box laying around they might be inclined to trade it for something they can use.

What do you mean by "transfer"? Do you mean to transfer files from your current computer to a different computer running Linux? Or do you mean to install Linux instead of (or in addition to) Wondows 98?

What's wrong with Windows 98? Is it lack of support for current websites or web browsers? Is it something else?

Why choose Linux?

Can you find someone who will give you a free XP upgrade? In my locale, there are people occasionally giving away computers that run XP. They generally advertise in a website called Freecycle. This is a really good service. I have given stuff away, and also gotten stuff through Freecycle.

How come you can't read CDs? Is there no CD reader on your computer?

That post is from 2010. Hopefully by now his financial situation has improved or someone has donated a fairly modern computer to him.

Churches should do more to help their members. One thing would be to have a computer drive. Lots of people have unused computers sitting around, take them to church so that they can be passed out to others! The Freecycle thing you speak of sounds good.

No one is producing software that supports Windows 98, and that includes web browsers that work with current websites. Linux is free and even old computers are still supported.

Hmmm.. I only paid atention to Lime Shark's post, and didn't notice how old the original post is. But maybe he's still in need.

I'm strange with regard to computers. I keep running them as long as the do what I want, unless I need the desk space. And I own several desks. I can see somebody running old software, like Office 97, on a windows 98 machine, and being perfectly happy with it, depending on what (s)he's trying to do.

I'm familiar with people who are desperately poor, and would appreciate the free gift of a functional computer that's vintage 1999. There are people that poor within a short drive of your church. I second the motion to start a computer drive in your church.

Freecycle is good too. It works, and there are fewer scammers on it than there are on some of the trading forums.

believe that you can use netbootin to place a linux on the flash drive and use that to start it up..

Also can download Puppy, and there is a version that has Exe to run it in windows

Also can donload and use wubi to install Ubuntu!
