Hi Jennifer.

...and got tattoos in the military, too, right?

(BTW I did consider joining an Observer Corps years back, but: guess what? it was abolished....)

Take care.

Sorry for poking my head here in the open Garage, yes I know I'm a girl and should be sitting on my hands but I did have a question...why are you limiting this discussion to the garage, we have at least 1 woman on the board who has serve in the military AND has seen combat (that would be me btw) ;) Just curious...

thanks

I've been in the active Army for 8 years, including a year in Kuwait, 4 months in Iraq and 3 months (so far) in Afghanistan. I know a little about treating PTSD if anyone has questions. If I don't have the answers I can probably find them in time.

As a fighter pilot in the USAF, beginning in 1950, I later became a wing commander in Korea and also Vietnam. The NA F-86E was the real workhorse over Mig Alley and superior to the Mig15s only after the E version came out. In Nam, the workhorse was the F-4 for the first few years.

I don't ever mention my service unless asked and to see what I was doing you would have to click on my signature and look below my pocket.

I want to emphasize that not only those who saw combat are the real heroes but there are many, many who never got close to either war that were just as important and should have shared in the medals as much as those who got them. I do not mean to diminish anyone's medals but for every one I earned personally, those who kept me in the air were the real heroes; whether they were back in Japan, S. Korea, the Philippines or wherever the bases were, they deserved the same medals and should have received them.

May God bless all those who ever served, whether in a war zone or back home building the tools for the war effort. Those who protest our wars, battles, etc. can thank all those veterans who are responsible for them not having to learn the German, Japanese, Korean or Vietnamese languages. And God bless those still engaged in battle for our freedom...

Saw this post and would like to put a little on it as well. I have been in the military in one way or another for the past 31 years. My dad was in the Army for for 20 years and I have been through a couple conflicts with him. I have been in the army now going on 13 years. 10 on active duty and 3 in the reserves. I have been deployed to Afghanistan and been stationed all over the world a few times. I have been through several firefights while serving in Afghanistan and I am here to tell you that one learns to pray hard everyday for a safe return. And you learn to pray harder when that first bullet zings past you. I pray every day, as I hope everyone else does as well, that this conflict will be over soon and my brothers and sisters will return home safely. I have looked the devil in the face and lived to tell the tale. I hope and pray my brothers and sisters that have done that same and will have to do the same, can do so with the Grace of God and the Blessings of Jesus Christ on their side. I pray that St. Michael will be by their side every moment while they are away from their families in that hostile environment.

I am still in the Army as a medic for 7 years, then as a nurse for the last 3, been in for 10 years now. Deployed for 3 total years, all in Iraq. I try not to go too much into those days, the first things I think of were the people that we lost.

Thanks to everyone for your service, especially those who served in direct combat. Also thanks to all of the spouses and family members of those who served...you served just like your loved one.
I spent 20 years in the Air Force; I was deployed to "war zones" on a couple of occasions, but always in support roles, so technically I never served in combat or saw any real action.

I served in the US Army for 26 years (1964-1990). I was in combat in Vietnam (1966-67). As a Christian in Vietnam I feel that the Lord protected me. As long as I was in my unit we never had to engage in open combat, so I never had to shoot anyone. The strange thing is that less than two months after I returned to the States, my unit was practically wiped out by the Viet Cong. Kinda makes me wonder if the Lord protected me and my unit as long as I was there. Anyway, I praise the Lord that even after serving in combat I am still reasonably well adjusted and suffer no psychological effects from my time there.
