Hello, I am on a team that is setting up a ministry to help people overcome pornography addiction through the glory of Jesus Christ. We are currently looking for a great curriculum that we can work through with everybody that wants our help. If anybody knows of something great I would love to see it. Thank you.

Also please take the survey.

Hi and welcome to the forums!

I went through Jeff Miller's series on "Sex: a 12-step program for men" and found the material practical and biblical. It not only covers pornography, but a very thorough discussion on sexuality including lust, fantasy, masturbation, romance, purity. Perhaps you may wish to consider this as a supplement to your ministry, which I too hope the Lord will bless others through it.

kylerhockey,

I didn't take the survey because there was no answer which applied to me. I was exposed to porn at a young age and did see it quite often in the Navy but really wouldn't consider myself to have been "addicted" or "hooked". I never bought the stuff in any form because I thought it a waste of good money.

I wouldn't say I am now free from such things because there is alwys the temptation and pride does come before the fall.

I think this discussion would be better in the private mens forum located in 3e here : viewforum.php?f=45

Blessings,
Randy

Derek, thank you. That looks like a good program. Keep the good stuff coming.

Randy, sorry there wasn't a category for you. I would consider you under the free from porn category for this poll. I appreciate your honest answer. I'm going to leave this topic where it currently is. The main purpose of this discussion is to lead me toward some great material for this ministry. Also, I do not want to discriminate against women. Some studies show that as high as 20% of women struggle with porn. The ministry we are trying to create will be both for women and men, even couples. We wish to help spouses recover from the hurt as well.

Thanks for the good answers so far. Let's keep this discussion coming.

I hate that porn is so taboo. It is a sin, it needs to be talked about openly so people Can get help and not feel so alone. I think the mentality that this topic should be hush hush within the Christian church has caused a ton of problems. This mentality leads to most people never addressing this sin issue. Over 90% of men struggle with porn and over 20% of women. This issue needs dealt with

If the subject were taboo, it would not be allowed. But as I noted above, this discussion is open to people of all ages as well as both genders. That fact calls for a degree of discretion beyond what might be expected in an adults-only discussion. If you want a more open discussion, that can be accommodated in the private discussion areas I've already noted.

I agree that sin needs to be dealt with. There is a place for open discussion and a place for discretion. There is a place for open public confession and another place for personal private confession. Remove the open confession and a "ton" of problems might be a result. Remove the private personal confession and you may also get a "ton" of other troubles. Indeed in the past the church has had some irrational taboo's and even some rational taboo's that were hinderances. We must be careful not to jump the line to another extreem for in the balance is much more devestation to families, children, and true ministry.

The issue needs to be dealt with. But I question your statistics. What does "struggle" mean? In some sense of this term "struggle" closer to 100% of men are affected because of how we are "wired" (so-to-speak). However, I doubt seriously that 90% struggle if the definiton of this term lies somewhere closer to addiction. What was the average age of this 90%/20% survey result?
Pornography is a reality and must be dealt with. Dealt with realistically and not with over-exaggerated statistics. If your ministry is in this area I would encourage you. But I would also caution you. I am learning (quite often the hard way) that all ministry must be done with a delicate balance in quite a few areas.

Blessings,
Randy

I do not believe porn is taboo either, but i feel that it should be discussed in a place where we are sure without any doubt that the ones allowed to see such a discussion are of the age to do so

The Mortification of Sin http://www.amazon.com/Mortification-Sin ... 882&sr=8-1 by John Owen (1616 - 1683). Overcoming Sin and Temptation is a compilation of three Owen treatises which includes Mortification, along with Of Temptation: The Nature and Power of It and The Nature, Power, Deceit and Prevalence of Indwelling Sin.

I have not read the latter two but would highly recommend Mortification. Unfortunately, not many will be convinced to read it because they won't want to slog through 17th century English where thinking is actually required. For those who do, it is a worthwhile slog. Be willing to make notes in the margin to help you fully grasp what he is saying. I went through it with my Saturday a.m. men's Bible study last spring. I think all thought it a worthwhile endeavor. An outline and study guide is available on Bible.Org here:
http://bible.org/series/mortification-s ... nd-summary

Regards.

I appreciated the strong emphasis on God's enabling grace in Sex Is Not the Problem (Lust Is) by Joshua Harris. Workbooks are also available for men and for women.
