What does the bible say about it. Is it biblical? If you choose to apply for unemployment for a part time job but also choose to stay home and limit the amount you will work so a child won't have to be at a sitter should you apply for unemployment. Should you avoid doing so based on that or is the only tenet to consider making sure that you apply for and collect benefits lawfully? What are the things to consider?

Skarlson,

To my knowledge, unemployment insurance (UI) programs did not exist in the ancient Near East and the Bible does not directly address your question. IMO, there is nothing wrong with taking advantage of UI benefits provided one does so honestly and in keeping with the pertinent legal and regulatory provisions. Generally, that means you must be available for and actively seeking gainful employment. There may be exceptions to that rule, such as when a person is attending school or is in some kind of retraining program. You would need to check with your state UI office to determine what the exact rules are in your location at this time, including whether or not you can legitimately collect UI benefits when you are available for part-time work but not full-time work.

On the same lines, there are a lots of verses in the bible that warn against dishonest gain:

("elight" should be "delight")
Proverbs 11:1 1 The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but an accurate weight is his elight. Context (NET)

Luke 16:10 10 “The one who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and the one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much. Context (NET)

Just as Jesus could feed the five thousand with five measly loaves and two fish, so he can take care of us with what little we can offer him by Faith.

Like Gideon, I think UI benefits, when used honestly and with the intent of a temporary benefit untill one is able to and gain employment, is a helpful and Biblical program or process.

Remeber Ruth and how Boaz provided protection and substance for her and Naomi. Notice how this was not unusual for Boaz but he did provide a bit extra for her. God's law did have provision for those who were in need and when Israel followed that law those in need were cared for (though they did have to do something since it wasn't mailed to their door[i.e. Ruth had to work and gather grain]).

Skarlson, I think you need to talk with your pastor who will know your situation and you more personally and be able to plug you in to get help more specifically for you and your family's needs.

Blessings,
Randy
