Welcome to the volunteer room we are so glad you stopped by! If you are here that means that you are interested in becoming a volunteer at Bible.org. Before we begin I would like to take a minute to introduce myself:

Who am I? My user name is SonShine my real name is Gaye and I am a believer in Christ, Jeremiah 10:10 The Lord is the only true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King. I also believe that He has given me a mandate: Jer 1:5 &7: “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb,I chose you. Before you were born I set you apart....The Lord said to me...But go to whomever I send you and say whatever I tell you. This is my desire to speak for Him in whatever capacity He gives me. I live in Texas where I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Bible.org as well as the Admin for the Women's Exec Comm and the Tapestry Blog as well as being a helper for the Children's Ministry Coordinator. We recently moved from Fla to TX to fulfill the call of the Lord. My husband, David is the founder of the forum and is now the new Exec Direc for Bible.org. It is our hope and prayer that we (working together with you) are able to spread the word about the trustworthy resources for bible.org in whatever avenue God presents. What do I love to do: Study the Bible, interact with new people; write; cook; and love my kids.

Now that I've said hello here are a couple of things that we need you to do:

If you are interested in volunteering go to http://bible.org/book/volunteer-task-listings and fill out the volunteer application.
Once that is done, go to http://users.bible.org and join the group titled Site: Volunteers tasks and collaboration site
This is where new tasks are described and the volunteers interact with each other and the staff.
At any time you can email me using my forum user name SonShine memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=94 to ask questions or just to chat or here on the forum.

I have set up a wiki on Users.bible.org see http://users.bible.org/groups/best_bibl ... le_readers to discuss and review Free Bible Study programs and Bible readers. I am using the forum here to set up a poll to see what people use and what they like best.

If we dont have your favorite bible study program listed on users go ahead and add it.. and if you have a comment on a bible study program or a bible reader add your comment and/or review.

to post on users you will need to register.. it will send you your password automatically within 20 secs. If you dont get an automatic message check your spam box. Users and http://bible.org share the users table so an account on one is the same as the other. The forum is a separate program and has its own user name and password.

ps i am looking for someone to test all the programs and write reviews and compare them for our users.
pps i am looking for someone to be the manager of the users group above.

I was a big e-Sword fan, but since downloading the newer version of TheWord I haven't looked back. TheWord is a much more powerful program. You can configure and save as many viewing options as you like, which is a nice feature allowing you to set up the exact number, type, and relative locations of windows that you want for each of your viewing configurations. You can even select the colors you prefer. Unlike e-Sword, all of the resources are fully searchable -- all of your commentaries and other books. And you can do Boolean searches. If you want, you can set up your views to see cross-references and/or commentary notes in-line. This program has lots of customizable features that make it very user friendly. A new feature I like is the way your commentary tabs light up if they contain notes for the verse of scripture that you have highlighted. I'm still learning my way around this program, but I can tell you I like it a lot!

You can download the basic program and some available add-on resources (including the NET with full notes) at http://www.theword.gr, where you will also find a discussion forum for getting help, offering feedback, etc. And you'll find a lot more free add-on resources here.

My favorite is e-Sword. I have used e-Sword regularly for several years, and have always been pleased with it.

I also use, somewhat less regularly, Bible Explorer, Sword Searcher and Pradis.

I would certainly be interested in testing more of the listed programs and writing reviews about them! I am always looking for more Bible programs, online and otherwise.

OK, I just downloaded TheWord, since a few of you commented so favorably on it. I'm pretty impressed so far. It may not replace e-Sword for me, but I'm not very familiar with it yet. I like the colorful layout a little better than e-Sword's more bland layout. It's a bit more difficult for me to find things on TheWord, compared to e-Sword, but that may improve upon familiarity. So far, so good. And it downloads nice and fast...

So far still switching back to E-Sword do to my familiarity, on the occassion however now mainly sold on The Word software, software. I agree the different Skins in The Word program make the appearance much better especially since you can adjust to your own style. I also like the Mouse Roll over function, for the comparison verses, thats really adds ease of use once you are use to it.

The Word also provided the ability for the user to move or resize stations around to anywhere on the platform. Take note! doing this can get confusing a bit and it is easy to get lost and loose things. I havent found the set to default button to find your way back when this does occur but sure there would be one. An improvment to this would be to be able to save at end of use, and if you do not save have the platform and all its docking components revert to the former structure, this is what most programs I have used have done. Once you modify things around if you close down it comes back to where you left it, I guess some may like that I would prefer to have a save button and do it that way

In fairness this may all be built in and through further exploration I may find.

Gideon I went to that "free add on resources" link there is quite a bit there, however with the links there is not much to explain what each provides, there are many so it was a little difficult to decipher. Some that I had high hopes for really did not provide much at all and have now cluttered the scene a little. Being EXE files I went to add remove programs, they do not seem to set up in there so I guess I have to go into the program of The Word to remove the exe files manually that I no longer require would this be correct? Or you havent tried yourself? thanks Wayne

Thanks, people!

I'm downloading TheWord right now. Nothing is fast and easy on my 11 y/o PC... Free? did someone say free? I love free software, and there ain't much these days that runs on my PC. I really have to upgrade to the 21st Century.

IT'S ALIVE!!!

The Word is now up and running on my surplus, three tube UNIVAC Frankenputer..
I only checked a few things to make sure it's running OK. I have Esword but have never spent much time exploring features. I think Esword uses a newer KJV (+), but I could be mistaken. Does anyone know? Both have NET.
I lost the NET Bible due to a bad HD sector.

Thanks to all for your comments.

Wanelad,

To save your viewing configurations in TheWord, go to View, Layout, Save current layout. You can save as many layouts as you like, each with the name you give it. Then you can come back to a saved layout by going to View, Layout, and then select from the list of My Layouts. You can also use an icon on the toolbar to quickly jump to the Layout menu.

I have removed some files (books) from my computer that I had duplicated, but can't remember offhand where the modules are located on the hard drive. I'll try to get that for you, Wanelad. If you're eager, you could try doing a file search for something you know you have downloaded. When it comes up, you'll have the file location. Once you've got that, all you need to do is delete the file.

Per comments in TheWord forum:
Quote:
A free training session (workshop) will be held on February 26, from 6:30-9:30 PM in the Main Sanctuary of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, California, USA. The workshop will be taught by Pastor Douglas Hamp.

This event will be streamed live over the internet at http://www.calvarychapelcostamesa.com/
And videos will be put on Youtube shortly after the event.

Thanks Gideon I found the pre set layouts there as well, I thought they must be somewhere. I will just go into the program and remove that should not be too hard. I will have to wait until it goes on UTube as live in Australia hope it is not too long after the training but by then will probably be pretty familiar with it.

There seems to be something from the program that tries to hijack when I am working else where when cut and pasting it flies up with verses for some reason not sure what the go is there Wayne

I'm mostly a Mac guy, so Accordance is the standard bearer for me. I've looked at MacSword, but now I only use it to get texts for MacSword into Accordance. On the iPhone, Mantis Bible Study is my preferred bible study program on the go... But boy, I can't wait until the iPad.

Serendipity:"I think Esword uses a newer KJV (+), but I could be mistaken. Does anyone know?"

I'm pretty sure they both use the 1769 KJV, which is the standard public domain text. But TheWord doesn't specify on their information screen which KJV it is.
