One that is interesting is the Haydock Commentary of the 16th century English translation of the Bible. He's a Catholic, like me, but I am sharing this with you because it is a complete Biblical commentary - cover to cover - and it will at least give you a perspective and point of view, as other commentaries also will.

The commentary was composed middle 19th century.

Google "Haydock Bible"...

While those listing are organized by commentaries on individual books, I believe that you can recognize the sets that have repeated entries.

The general rule is not to buy sets unless you get a really good deal. Sets are uneven in quality. Most of the best sets have some weak entries.

Almost all evangelical authorities recommend the NICOt and the NICNT as sets to begin one's library. If I were going to buy a single set to begin a library, I would buy the New American Commentary from Broadman-Holman. It is more complete and more consistently conservative if not always the best on each book. The NICOT has a lot of gaps in its coverage while the NICNT would be better bought as individual volumes - unless you get a great deal.

Another option would be to buy the newer version of the Expositor's Bible Commentary, but make sure that you consider the coverage adequate for your needs. The older edition is at a much lower price than when I bought it in the 1980's, but except for Matthew and maybe Acts the NT is (although reliable) unremarkable by today's standards. Some of the OT volumes are still well worth the money.

I strongly agree with John; buy the volumes you need for your current studies unless you get a super great deal. I also would second his recommendation for the NAC' the volumes that I have used have been very good.

I also agree with pastorjohn. Sets are expensive, over the years, I have purchased individual commentaries for current studies at that time. I have a collection, though not complete, of commentaries called "Everyman's Bible Commentary" (EBC). These are paperback books around 125 pages and written by conservative scholars such as Ryrie, Harrison, Johnson, Luck, Vos, et al. They are well written and cover a book very well.

However I have found that any commentary individual or a set will leave out verses. It is my misfortune when I really want a verse explained and go to a commentary they don't cover it! It is my opinion that you should pick books like choosing shoes. Go to a library or friend and "try it on" before you by a commentary or especially a set.

Today for the first time I searched (Yahoo) "exegesis Matthew 5:33"--and was delighted to find among many fascinating entries Bible.cc commentaries, which offers 8 free commentaries, including Clarke, Gill, Wellesley Notes, Schofield, DFB, and Henry. For anyone still seeking "the best," I think you'll find these interesting as you search.
I admit I'm still struggling to understand what Jesus meant by Seek first the Kingdom..., and also wondering if there is one True commentary or if God may really want us to develop and use our own best judgement.
