Any one have a coin collection? My dad was in the U.S. Navy and from his voyages he collected a number of foreign coins and currency. His collection peaked my interest in coins and I have been collecting them every since. My oldest coin is a Queen Victoria penny from the 1800's. My most recent addition is a Benjamin Franklin half dollar.

I would never be able to actually call myself a coin collector...yet I am fairly interested in numismatics. I've got currency from about 2 dozen different countries I've kept. I also have spent a little time examining ancient Roman, Greek and Second Temple coinage. I find such things to be rather fun. I do hope there are others here who may have an interest as well.

So which "head" and what year is your Queen Victoria?

My queen Victoria penny dated 1897; the head of the coin is a picture of her head with a flowing head covering over the back of her head and neck. The tail is that of a Roman soldier with a shield and trident. The head reads (in Latin) Victoria dei Gra Britt Regina Fid Def Ind Imp. I believe (this is Latin off of top of my head) Victoria of Great Britain faithful Queen defender emperor.

While looking in my collection I came across another coin even older it is from France and has a bust of Napoleon as the head and the tail (quite worn) has two olive branches. The coin is from 1813. So I misspoke when I said my oldest coin was the queen Victoria penny it was in fact my Napoleon coin which is the 5 franc coin.

What a wonderful find! Exciting!

And the translation of Victoria dei [sic should read Dei for "God"] Gra Britt Regina Fid Def Ind Imp might better be rendered something like, "Victoria, by the grace of God: Queen of Britannia, Defender of the Faith, Empress of India" (or something to that effect).

I used to collect coins, but have given my collection to my son. I still help him with it, but he doesn't have any super old coins.

You ought to take him to some flea markets usually you can find coins and some relatively old ones rather inexpensively.

I haven't been active for some time, but I used to collect ancient coins. Buying uncleaned coins right as they were dug out of the ground with metal detectors, made it inexpensive and challenging. Unfortunately, the supply of uncleaned coins today is both more expensive (dealers used to practically give them away) and poorer quality (the finders now keep all the good coins for themselves). But I have Jewish coins from the time of Christ, Roman coins from over fifty different emperors, Greek coins from Alexander and his father. My oldest coin is only about a hundred years younger than the invention of coins. And occasionally I found some real surprises, like a coin minted by the great grandfather of Dracula.

BookerG - that is fascinating. I hope you have those coins locked in a safe or some real good hiding place.
