Welcome to the Catholic Theology sub forum.

The purpose of this sub forum is to discuss things within Catholicism that may or may not line up with the Scriptures. (Roman, Eastern Orthodox, Greek Orthodox etc)

Please remember that while we allow discussion of the various doctrines within Catholicism this is an Evangelical Christian Forum which believes in
  • Sola Scriptura,
  • Sola Gratia,
  • Sola Fide,
  • Solus Christus,
  • Soli Deo Gloria
What this forum is NOT!

This forum is NOT the place to bash Catholicism nor is it the place to bash either Evangelical Christians or the Reformation or any one individual. If any one is found violating this, posts will be immediately removed and warnings given.

This is also NOT the place for those who disagree with Evangelical Christianity or the Forums Statement of Beliefs to use this forum as a "teaching platform" to promote beliefs contrary to the above. While it is permissible to answers questions asked concerning these beliefs starting threads with the attempt to teach will be removed forthwith and warnings issued.

Please remember that while we allow discussion of the various doctrines within Catholicism if you are here to simply promote Catholicism of any type this forum is not for you.

The "One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church", is the church which is universal, and which includes all who have faith in Jesus and are filled with the Holy Spirit of God no matter what denominational affliation they belong to.

There are Christians and non Christians within the Evangelical faith and there are Christians and non Christians within Catholicism. This forum is to come together on what we have in common and not what we don't. There is hope ... but only when unity is sought in Christ and in the power of his Holy Spirit.

Remember the Code of Conduct standards apply as well.

I've been scanning Amazon and can't find what I have a hard time believing doesn't exist. Does anyone know of a good reader that presents introductions, explanations and excerpts from a variety of major Roman Catholic thinkers in the last two centuries? The 2 volumes of Modern Christian Thought by James Livingston has several Catholic thinkers in it, but I was hoping to find something more explicitly Catholic with more thinkers and more pages per thinker.

WinnerByDefault, as a matter of principle I avoid replying in the "catholic theology" section because I am not in favour of theological ghettos.

I think your best bet for a summary of major Catholic thinkers is in a series of books dealing with modern Catholic theology. I don't own copies of these volumes, but I believe Amazon.com has them available. A search in Amazon under "catholic theology" should yield some good fruit for you.

I am replying here because I received a private message asking about your message and I gave it some consideration and decided that helping you was more important than my "secret" principle.

Sorry I don't personally own (nor know of) such a volume. However, instead what I would recommend would be actually finding persons who speak for the Catholic Church and actually reading them (instead of only a guided reader...which can be helpful but is always selective). I personally have benefited from reading volumes by Hans Urs von Balthasar, Karl Rahner, Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI), and Henri Nouwen. They are all fantastic writers (the first two are quite philosophical, and the first three are definitely of the European theological persuasion...they are also all from the last sixty years). I hope to read more of their works and similar ones by others in the near future.

just as well I don't have any problems posting in the Catholic section :D

Seriously DB it is no different than having an Evangelical section, or any of the other sections this forum is divided into.

But I like reading Peter Kreeft, and he has a lot of good articles on his website (which you should be able to find through Google),

joy

Dinah

A book that I happened upon at a used book store has proved to be very interesting indeed. Though it doesn't carry the imprimateur or nihil obstat that marks an "officially approved" text, Catholicism by Richard P O'Brien is an excellent resource.
