I was fortunate enough to get a Kindle in Nov. 2007 when they first were available. Still have it and haven't upgraded. :D But now I mostly read on my Android phone, mainly because I like the flexibility of more book formats and I didn't like carrying around two different devices. At this point, now that Kindle borrowing is available from libraries, I still think Kindle is the superior machine. But it won't totally win in my eyes until it supports .epub.

(I support a world with readers that are agnostic to format.)

Have you been to Project Gutenberg? (http://www.gutenberg.org/) I don't know if they'll have what you're looking for, but everything there is free. And they even have downloads of Kindle-format books.

I wish I knew more about the workings of Amazon in the UK. Not sure what is available to you guys.

that would be too small for me -- your eyes must complain after a fashion -- i still prefer a nice "analog" book but options are precious things

Not at all. Just like any other eReader, you can make the font as big or small as you need it to be. The reading app I use (FBReader) also has other customizations for color, font, brightness, etc. I've used Aldiko as well and it has similar adjustments; I suspect most do. I also have the Kindle app for my phone and Google books.

I have a sneaking suspicion I may be getting a kindle for mah birthday... my mama knows I want one really bad and said she'd buy me one... if I didn't hurry up and buy one myself.

I played around with my friend's and loved it.

I was confused about something on the amazon store though - it said you can get thousands of free books but that transfer rates applied...? anybody know what that is/explain how to get free books?

I've never heard of it either. I have hundreds of free books and haven't paid a fee for them.

Stumped on the transfer rates for books. The only thing I can think of is that it you get a Kindle email address that lets you email documents to yourself to read on your Kindle. I think it charges for those...maybe 10 cents each? I think I used that method with Instapaper--to save things online to read later on my Kindle.

This is where I'm getting the rate thingy:

Open Library - Over 1 million free titles
Open Library's goal is to provide a page on the web for every book ever published.

1. Visit openlibrary.org.

2. Search for a title and make sure to check the 'Only show eBooks' checkbox.

3. When viewing a title, click the 'Send to Kindle' link next to the edition in which you're interested.

4. You will be directed to Amazon.com to choose a device for wireless delivery using the Kindle Personal Document Service (charges apply).

5. Open the ebook from your Kindle's home screen and enjoy.

Anyone care to explain if this is different from downloading ebooks from elsewhere?
-reba.

What's happening is that site is using the email address I mentioned to send books as documents to your Kindle, so yes, there's a charge for that. (to convert the document) But it looks like you can download any of their books and just move them to your Kindle manually and it doesn't cost anything.

Oh, so they are free if I move them myself, but not if they convert them?

That makes sense... I am not so lazy that I won't move the books over myself.

Did you know you can now publish your E Book on Amazon Kindle for FREE?

I published my E Book with them and it took them 24 hours to make it available in the US, UK, and Europe.

How can you read a book on a cell-phone? The screen must be too small to read surely?

I'm really not very good with new technology. I just bought a cell-phone which takes photos like a camera. Whenever it rings I press the wrong button and take a picture of my ear!

I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread.

My husband and I want to get an eReader but we have no clue which one to get. He's leaning against Kindle since it doesn't support many of the available formats. Interesting to see what your experiences are.

Project Gutenberg is one of my favourite sites! We'll want an eReader that allows us to read the books available there.
