Forum rules

The intention of the Bible Studies in this section of the Forum is for us to study the Scriptures together as disciples of Christ.

The apostle Paul tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:1), and formative bible studies are one way that this happens. So the purpose of these studies is :

Our studies will include use of the NET bible with the translators notes, bible.org articles and study helps, as well as other commentaries, the work and insights of fellow members of the Body of Christ.

This is not an appropriate place to dismantle the text, or to dispute its authority. We will also not dispute authorship, or the acceptability of any book in the Protestant Canon. This can be done in room 5. Bible Specific Questions/Discussions Section

Of course, the usual Forum Code of Conduct rules apply to all posts.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship 16 of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

It seems that there is some sort of typo in Matthew 1:6-8. I am lookingback on 1 and 2 Kings and Chronicles and King Joram was Ahab's decedent not Jehoshaphat's . Jehoram was Jehoshaphat's son. Can someone clarify this for me?

There's actually 2 separate, distinct Joram's mentioned in 2 Kings which makes things a bit confusing.

King Joram of Judah (Son of Jehoshaphat)
2 Kings 1:17 17 He died just as the Lord had prophesied through Elijah. In the second year of the reign of King Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat over Judah, Ahaziah’s brother Jehoram replaced him as king of Israel, because he had no son. Context (NET)

and

King Joram of Israel (Son of Ahab)
2 Kings 3:1 1 In the eighteenth year of King Jehoshaphat’s reign over Judah, Ahab’s son Jehoram became king over Israel in Samaria; he ruled for twelve years. Context (NET)

I'm having trouble identifying which Joram (if either) it is in 1 Chronicles 26:25 though. What passage is Joram mentioned in 1 Kings?

Both Ahab and Jehoshaphat had sons named Joram (Jehoram).
Ahab's son reigned over Israel (Northern Kingdom) from about 852 to 841 BC and, since he is NOT in the line of David, he is not the one mentioned in Matthew.
Jehoshaphat's son reigned over Judah from about 853 to 841 (yes the same time which adds to the confusion). Since he is in the line of David he is the one Matthew is referring to.

The Joram of 1 Chronicles 26:25 is a Levitical Preist and is listed with his responsibilities within the service of the temple. He is not a king because his is the line of Levi and not Judah.

Both men had the same name and is translated to english either Joram or Jehoram. You will find in 2 Kings 8 both names are used for the son of Jehoshaphat. "Jehoram" is used in verse 1, IMO to seperate him from the son of Ahab who is mentioned in the same verse (you will see the same thing in 2 Kings 8:25). "Joram" is used for him in verses 21, 23, & 24 of chapter 8. You will find Jehoram used of Ahab's son in 2 Kings 1:17; 3:1; 3:6.
Both names carry the meaning of "Yahweh (Jehovah) is exalted".

BTW Jehoshaphat's Joram/Jehoram married a daughter of Ahab and, of course, sister of Ahab's Joram/Jehoram. Both are evaluated Biblically as bad Kings by God's standards.

Hope this helps you.
Blessings,
Randy

Thank You - That makes sense now.

Derek - I was looking at the passage of 2 Kings 8:16-24 that mentioned King Ahab's Joram. Boy, how confusing is that - LOL
