Just saw on the news this morning that CERN has just come online and begun testing their particle super-collider. The interview I watched had a Physicist stating that it would be recreating the events of Genesis one. He repeatedly used the language of the Biblical creation in reference to the events unfolding in Switzerland. Also, the intention is to attempt to verify that matter can indeed be created by a Big Bang. Since I know there are quite a number of you on here that believe in some form of macro-evolution and/or the Big Bang, I thought I'd see what your take was on this...

I was kind of hoping the Swiss wouldn't produce too big of a bang.

They are going to try to create black holes. If they can collide two atoms, their thought is they make a black hole and it will be unstable and fall apart.

My question is, isn't that a huge risk on a probability? If it's probable in ANY way, .005% that it wouldn't collapse. Even though it's a small black hole, how do you contain it? How long does it take before it's absorbing its containers, and falling to the earth's core? There it eats at the earth's core and we have, in science's eyes, a new genesis because our world and solar system and galaxy is being absorbed by the black hole we created!

Besides that, it's an election year. I think we MORE THAN ENOUGH black hole's to observe without making more.

But what do I know.

imagine that, God created all there is, and he didn't even have a Hadron Super collider! I wanna see him take dirt and form a man, then breathe on it....sounds like this physicist is just another poser with a string of letters after his name.

And of course the fear-mongers had a field day with this...It'll create a black hole and suck us all in! More posers looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Posers are everywhere....

actually what the buzz is, it is about the "God particle" higgs boson theory which says 98 percent of the universe is made up of dark matter & dark energy. Think about it this way only 2 percent of the universe is in visable light. Anyway they are looking for even smaller particles than the protons, neutrons, and elctrons themselves. It could open new areas of discovery.

As Kola already stated their focus is to find the Higgs boson (named after Peter Higgs) as it would iron out question(s) in the Standard Model.

Quote:
If the Standard Model of particle physics were perfectly symmetric, none of the particles in the model would have any mass. Looked at another way, the fact that most fundamental particles have non-zero masses breaks some of the symmetry in the model. Something must therefore be generating the masses of the particles and breaking the symmetry of the model. That something - which has yet to be detected in an experiment - is called the Higgs field.
