What do you think of Dwight Moody? Of his evangelizing, his teachings, the Bible Institute he founded, and his legacy?

Does he reflect a trend in Christianity that has gone by the wayside or is he part of the church that is ongoing?

My perception is that he has been largely influential upon the development of Evangelicalism via his use of evangelistic crusades, calls for "personal salvation", Bible institutes (rather than colleges in the more formal sense, esp. the liberal arts). He was a part of a much wider movement though that has shaped those of us who belong to Evangelicalism (e.g., Keswickianism, the Great Awakenings, Fundamentalism). I think his influence still continues, but that it has shifted significantly (sometimes for the better and sometimes the worse).

I think that D.L. Moody has had a significant place in history. However, this impact, due to the years has seemed to fade. He has done many things for evangelical Christianity. What is interesting is that his name is popular but few know the name of the Sunday school teacher who lead Moody to the Lord. His name was Edward Kimball. "His Sunday-school teacher, Edward Kimball, kept track of young Moody, urging him to return when his attendance lapsed...On April 21, 1855, Kimbell felt it was time to ask Moody for a commitment to Christ...That day Moody became a Christian." Quote from the book "The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History," by A Kenneth Curtis, J. Stephen Lang, Randy Petersen, p. 167.
