Hi all,

Not sure if I understood the forum rules correctly. All I know is that my query is about Pentecostal Church History around the time frame of 1800-1945.

What I was wondering is if anyone knows of any early Pentecostal Church History reasourches.

Ex. Websites, books, articles, videos etc.

Thanks in advance,

John

I recommend the Christian History and Biography site it was a sister magazine to Christianity Today. I have one particular issue "Christian History", issue 58, vol. XVII, Number 2, the covder of the magazine reads "The Rise of Pentecostalism." This magazine has well written and scholarly articles. Go to Christian History and Biography online (I am sorry I am not tech savvy enough to make a button link to connect you to this site. In addition to the articles they have a page in the back of the magazine which gives sources. For example, "The Holiness-Pentecostal Tradition: charismatic movements in the Twentieth Century. Eerdmans, 1997 by Vinson Synan; "Restoring the faith: the Assemblies of God, Pentacostalism, and American Culture." Univ. of Illinois, 1993 by Walter J. Hollenweger. "The Dictionary of Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements," Zondervan, 1988. They also give some websites: http:// http://www.dunamai.com/brightspot/azusa.htm, The Christian history online is http://www.christianhistory.net; and http://web2010.com/pctii/cyber/ this site is for scholarly research on the Pentacostal movement. I hope this helps may God bless you in your search of history.

Hi Wanelad,

I hope you are able to find the folder, or recover it.

I'm particularly interested in the major players in Pentecostalism.

Such as John G. Lake and John Alexander Dowie as you mentioned. Maria Woodworth - Etter, Aimee Semple McPherson, Smith Wigglesworth, William Branham etc.

I recently heard that Roberts Liardon has some great resources on the early Fathers (and Mothers) of Pentecostalism/Charismaticism.

Edit: Just noticed your new post. That is quite funny.

Ah, Thanks.

I am all too familiar with Smith Wigglesworth's website, so you're right.

Thanks for the links my friend.

Some believers were generous enough to give me some of Roberts Liardon's videos on God's Generals; a 11 set collection.

Big apologies to those of you who tried the web addresses I gave I should have realized that they were quite old. I am sorry about that. I had another Christian History magazine but I cannot find it. It was about a woman preacher/evangelist; I think her name had Aimee in it and it is also at the Christian History site.

I found the name of this woman pastor/evangelist, her name was Aimee Semple Mcpherson and she was a very dynamic Pentecostal preacher. One time she rode a motorcycle up onto the platform where she was going to speak. There is an article on her at the Christian History website go to the left margin and scroll down to Browse by Topic and then click on Women and you will find her name. In the mean time I will see if I can find the magazine on her.

The Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center is directed by a good friend of mine and one of the leading North American Pentecostal historians Darrin Rodgers (particularly of the Assemblies of God, but also of a number of other churches as well). They not only have many resources they make freely available, but are always adding many more. You will find many of documents already available online and many more added over time. In fact, I was just visiting with him two days ago and he was telling me that there is an effort underway right now to pull together the largest collection of Pentecostal historical documents from many other Pentecostal traditions (documents numbering in the millions). You might consider writing to him if you are looking for something specific (certain churches, traditions, time-periods) or try doing the searching on the site yourself. He is an amazing resource and could direct you to whomever or whatever resources might be most helpful. Vinson Synan and Walter Hollenweger have done quite a bit of work as well.

While I am no Pentecostal historian, I do take a keen interest in Pentecostal history (as a Pentecostal - pastor/scholar) and have read somewhat widely and continue to. This week I have taken in a number of excellent lectures at the annual meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies from a number of leading Pentecostal historians in the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), Church of God in Christ, and Assemblies of God that were enlightening concerning where we've been, where we are and where we might be heading (or where we should set our trajectories as a movement).

A little late to the game, but as for some pentecostal history that goes back to Azusa St and discusses the history of a particular social outlook among pentecostals I recommend Paul Alexander's Peace to War: Shifting Allegiances in the Assemblies of God.
