I am hoping to get an ASUS eee PC which I think is the gadget under consideration (the 4G version is not currently available in the UK because of high demand). I was thinking, having read a couple of threads like this, and having had some experience of trying to use Linux but having only partial success, that if all else fails I would probably be content with having a few bible versions on the device as simple pdf files, and using the index if there is one, or the simple Adobe Acrobat Reader search facility to find my way around. So I have had a quick look and the King James Version is easy to find and there is a nice Received Text Greek version with an index here http://www.christianhospitality.org/greektr.htm. Other versions are easy to find as chapter by chapter text files, which I suppose is not too bad if one did a bit at a time.

And now for the conclusion of the matter. No, I didn't get the Bible to run in Linux. Pity really. It is a good simple fast OS. And takes very little space. But after so many failed attempts, I gave up. It is so much easier to go to XP and have done with it. e-Sword is in and runs very well.
Thanks to all who gave input. Gary, I am glad you got yours to work. I do wish mine had and I am dissappointed that it didn't.
Am I dissappointed with the Eee PC? No, most certainly not.

I also have a netbook, the Acer Aspire One, running Linpus Linux Lite OS which is a stripped down version of Fedora. I went through all that with Bible Desktop, Java, etc. with absolutely no success. Linux is new to me too. Also there are many kinds of Java, as well as many different Linux OSs. These netbooks (mini notebooks, 7" to 9") are very big right now, many of them running Linux, and there are going to be more and more of them. I bought mine specifically to have a Bible program on so that I could take it with me wherever I go. They are so portable; mine fits in my purse. I had checked out Bible Software for Linux before I even bought it. What a disappointment that I couldn't get any Bible program to install and run. Someone needs to address this problem because there is a real need out there. I had the NET Bible on, but it was an HTML file, not a program, and it was a pain to navigate. I had to go in and find the contents file among all the others (one for each chapter of each book) and by the time I got to the reference I wanted, everybody else in the Bible study was on to the next reference.
Well, finally, I took it back to the shop where I bought it. The three guys there are all Linux fans and one of them tried to put Ubuntu on, but it would not recognize the wireless hardware or the web cam, so that was no good. He reinstalled Linpus Linux Lite, put Wine (a Windows emulator) on it and installed Bible Works (which he knew I had on my other laptop) and it works fine. I was thrilled; I hadn't thought he could get Bible Works on because it is so big, over 4 gb (only 8 gb SSD on the machine), but he did it. There are a few little kinks to work out, but it is so wonderful to have all those resources at my finger tips. I was blessed that I had someone knowledgable to help me. Of course he did charge for it, but it was worth every cent. I haven't tried, but it may be possible to put e-Sword on too, with Wine. I don't have room for too much more. The Aspire One can be bought with Windows XP too. Hope this is a help to someone out there.
