Hi techies,

I haven't posted here for about a year and a half as each time I try to access this site from my home computer it allows me to log in then freezes up.

I'm accessing it now from a different computer and I have no problems.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

I've cleared all the cookies and reset all the history, any other options?

Sparky,

On rare occasions Bible org shuts down for everyone. This happened this last week. I assume you have a chronic problem. I had no problems on dialup with a 90's puter running WIN 98 as late as this year.
It also works fine on my state of the art setup.

What's your current setup? Have you tried different browsers (I prefer Firefox)?

Try it first thing after a cold bootup. Good luck.

Sometimes, we down under log on in the time period the back-ups are being done, that gives a message like "If problem persists, contact admin." Of course, it is the time we are getting in from work, had dinner, want to check the Forum ... a reminder that we live on the other side of the globe I guess.

I have had the freeze up issue for a few weeks now too. It goes fine for a couple of posts, then slows down, them freezes. I changed servers and it seems OK in Firefox.

Hi bud,

It's a chronic thing, I haven't been able to access the forums for the whole year and a half. I've tried IE7, IE8, Firefox and Google chrome.

Currently I'm using IE7 with high speed broadband (1500kbps).

No luck after a cold bootup either

The backup theory is interesting.....what time do they do the backups?

Not 100% sure ... 6:30 to 8:30pm ish Sydney time - I have not paid a lot of attention once I understood what the problem was. I just log on much later, or as soon as I get home.

We have reworked how backups are done, and they should no longer result in the site being off line. If this is not the case, please let me know.

The issue of the site freezing is interesting. Was the other computer you used to successfully access the site on your home internet connection?

I can't speak for Sparky, Brian, but it happens to me on a Mac, System10.5.8, when running Safari. Clearing cache seemed to help initially, but no longer. Closing Safari and beginning again does not help. I have to completely shut down and re-boot.
Using Firefox seems to have solved it for the time being.

One clarification. On my new setup, it NEVER freezes. I just can't get in for brief periods.
The Australia connection is interesting....

I had a lot of trouble using Windows explorer .... but changing to Firefox fixed that ... and have not had much trouble since (except the odd day or so), but then I usually check in am (Australian time) rather than PM

the other thing was that my old computer was just running out of RAM because all sites are so graphics rich .... we now have a new computer and things are much better.

BTW ... it is so nice to 'see' you again Sparky

joy

Dinah

I don't think it's the time factor then as I've tried to log on at many different times.

Brian, no the computer I'm using successfully now is a completely different internet connection at a completely different location.

I use A dell 2400 desktop running winXP, 2GB Ram, PentiumII @ 2.1 GHZ, accessing on DSL 1mb/768k from the US pacific.
I used to use IE8, but have noticed that it is running at slower and slower speeds. I tried Safari, and found it frequently Locked up. Chrome was pretty fast, but lacked the menu controls I'm used to. Brain, (here at the site) recommended Firefox, and I have been as pleased as punch since. I don't have any issues with site freezes, just software freezing.

I would try upgrading IE8, or switching to Firefox completely. If you deleted all Temp internet files, you can also try flushing your DNS cache, from a command prompt. see http://www.hosting.com/support/info/flushdns/

You can also change the settings in IE to update pages when you visit them rather than automatic which will try to update every page you've been to, every time you connect to the internet.

I'll give it a shot on my home computer with firefox then.

I also upgraded my internet connection the other day, didn't realise I was still on 256kbps! That might help

Dinah, howdy! How's things? I'm a dad since being on here last, been blessed with a ripper little boy!

Guy mentioned clearing your DNS cache. This free and easy to use app, Ccleaner, will do that and much more. It frees up space,
and can delete every type of temp file and cache. I've used it for years. Backup passwords before using for first time. It's powerful, so be careful when using advanced functions. I love it.

Thanks I'll give that a shot when I'm back home.
