I see similarities between Montanism and some modern church movements. Reliance on prophecy and perceived movements of the Holy Spirit certainly would be among the similarities. Much of what we know about montanism comes from it's detractors, so it is difficult to list their beliefs, but the efforts of some Bishops to stamp it out indicates that it was very much out of tune with developing proto-orthodoxy. Any thoughts on this subject?

I found it curious in my undergrad work that Montanism was referred to in a fairly positive way with regard to the history of the charismata in the Church and in order to create some sense of history for the the modern Pentecostal movement. There were of course many other groups and individuals throughout Church history who were mentioned, but it really struck me that this should be considered positive. Not all was regarded as positive, mind you, but enough so that it still surprised me.

The Montanist movement occurred around the second century and they believed in the immanent return of Christ and had a strict lifestyle. They made prophecies which some thought undermined the scriptures and therefore were considered heretical by some however Tertullian joined this group. Turtullian gave them some credibility, no doubt. Those who were already finding the governance of bishops confining, and apostolic succession a bit shady would have identified with those who felt the Holy Spirit should be the sole guide, along with prophets.
