There are now 4 volumes published in this new series and I own 2 of them. I purchased "James" about a year ago, but have not had the opportunity to really use it. (I do like what I have read.) Now I purchased "Matthew" this past week and have been pleased at every reading to date. I am impressed with the good sense which is married to sound information in this volume.

Now, I am still not sure how many "good" commentaries a person needs, somewhere between 3 and 10, I suppose. Yet this work in the ZEC by Osbourne should probably be at least in your top 5 - and perhaps higher. Until I again preach out of Matthew, I will not finalize my opinion, but my last series found me using Carson, Turner and Wilkins as my primary partners. I may very well have to ask one of them to share time with Osbourne the next time around.

Since I have France in the Tyndale set, and I also have his NIGTC on Mark, I am not at this time going to purchase his NICNT volume - unless alot more book money comes my way. I know that I disagree with his understanding of the Olivet discourse, but if one of you all has the volume and would like to post an opinion - that would be great.

I will attempt to post a little more on the ZEC another time.

If possible, what IS his opinion on the Olivet discourse, in a nutshell?

Paraphrased from page 865 - option 4:

The destruction of Jerusalem foreshadows the tribulation period, vv. 4-28 while vv 29-31 refer to the parousia. (agreeing with Hill, Ladd, Gundry, Turner, Daviess & Allison, and Wilkins)

This is also my choice - I did sit under Dr Turner at Grace. So it can work with a pretrib position.

John, thank you for sharing Osbourne's understanding of the Olivet discourse. How does France see it?

pastorjohn -- does Osbourne &/or France believe that Matt. 24 speaks to the 70AD sacking of Jerusalem or a future event?

1 would be hard pressed to find the 70AD event in either Matt or Mark -- Luke, yes

btw -- I also have 2 of the 4 (Galatians/James) -- haven't made my way thru either as yet :(

Galatians is on deck...

France sees the entire passage as looking only at the destruction of Jerusalem in the 1st century with no reference to the second coming.

Thanks, John. (I agree with you and Osbourne.) :)

Paco,

He sees 4-28 having primary reference to 70AD, but with a greater fulfilment at during the last days.

Cale,

I think we agree the majority of the time in spite of our respective foibles. John
