I'm looking for a complement to BECNT and WBC on 1-3 John. What do you recommend?

Are you looking for another intermediate-advanced commentary or something that would be slightly more pastoral? Is this for preaching a series or research and writing?

Very pastoral and yet having a strong grasp of the technical issues (without dealing with them explicitly in every case) is John Stott in the TNTC. Another that would be more technical but still fairly pastoral would be Akin in the NAC.

If you are looking for more technical yet...then Marshall (if you are okay with also reading an Arminian who was a fantastic and prolific theologian) in the NICNT. Otherwise you could always wait and see how long it takes Carson to publish his NIGNT on the Johannine letters (it should be excellent, but I don't know that there is a due date set for it yet...hopefully soon :D ).

Thank you. It's for my personal research.

Denver Seminary gives priority to NAC and PNTC. Both of them seems good and it's really hard to make decision.

The NAC is written by a Southern Baptist and the PNTC by an Australian Anglican - both would be considered to be somewhat reformed in their approach to salvation.

When it comes time to read the commentaries, I usually turn to Kruse in the PNTC first, the BECNT second, Marshall in the NICNT, Stott in the TNTC, and finally 2 brief works, that by Curtis Vaughan - originally published by Zondervan, and one by FF Bruce. I read Akin in the NAC if I have time and I use the WBC for reference.

Happy Reading! John

I read reviews of PNTC and will purchase it.

Thank you.
