Preface: Alain and Pastor John are compiling an annotated listing of the commentaries which they believe are the most helpful guides to the Scripture. They intend to share their thoughts on each of the 66 books of the Canon. We expect that the forum members will then share their own experiences in studying the Word. We hope that this will create a helpful resource for our members. Our goal is to enable others to have a better understanding of the Bible and also to practice good stewardship in the buying of commentaries.

Evaluation: Commentaries will be evaluated under 3 criteria. (All is our opinion of course!)

1. Intended Audience:

2. Doctrinal Perspective (see note 2 below)

3. Usefulness for Pastors, Teachers, and other students of the Word.

Note 1: There are helpful works which we left out. We made a decision to include the books that would be most helpful to pastors, theological students, and others with that kind of hunger for the Word.

Note 2: The definition of inerrancy is found here: http://www.bible.org/page.asp?page_id=679. The concept of infallibility maintains that the Scripture does not err with regard to spiritual or doctrinal matters, but may err concerning geography, history, etcetera.

Note 3: Pastor John has been reading books on books for many years and he is grateful to his both seminary professors and authors D. A. Carson, Tremper Longman, James Rosscup, John Glynn, John Evans and all the others from whom he has benefited. He has not intentionally "stolen" from any of them, but he has undoubtedly been influenced by all of them.

Deuteronomy

Brown, Raymond, BST, IVP
He is a British Baptist expositor who writes well. It can be a second tier resource

Brueggeman, Walter, INT, WJK
He can be stimulating, but has different presuppositions than John does - so he can also be frustrating.
:sign7: :sign7: :sign7:
:D :D
8) 8)

Christenson, Duane, WBC, (2 vols.) Nelson
These books are from an evangelical who holds that the book is a didactic poem. This is not for most pastors.
:sign7: :sign7: :sign7: :sign7:
:D :D :D

Craigie, Peter, C,. NICOT, Eerdmans
This has been the evangelical standard for years. It does not always provide help when the reader wants help.

Currid, John D. Ep Study Commentary, EP
It is a little more than a running exposition. I do not think that it should be the pastor's only resource, but it is helpful.

Harman, Allan, Deuteronomy: The Commands of a Covenant God, FOB, CFP
I think that this would be a helpful tool to get the "big picture" of Deuteronomy.

Mayes, A. D. H., NCB,
It is liberal and there are more thorough works from that perspective.

Mc Conville, Gordon, Apollos, IVP
We have a new evangelical effort of which to be proud. British Evangelicals are not as conservative as their American counterparts.

Merrill. Eugene, NAC, B & H
John found a reliably conservative help in this volume, but the conservatism was more consistent than the help. You need a more expository commentary as a partner.

Merrill, Eugene, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy: NLT Cornerstone Biblical Commentary, CBC, Tyndale
He also wrote Deuteronomy in this brand new volume. I intend to buy it for all 3 contributions.

Miller, Patrick, INT, WJK
He does write well. He is skeptical about the historicity of deuteronomy and that does matter sometimes.
:sign7: :sign7:

Payne, David, DSB, WJK
It seems more conservative than some other volumes in this series. This is more for devotional use and SS teachers than sermon preparation.

Thompson, John, TOTC, Eerdmans
He will help the Preacher. It is also a good value. I wish that it was a little fuller, but I suppose that is why I have more books!

Tigay, Jeffrey, JPSTC, JPS
It is a scholarly Jewish work.

Weinfeld, Moshe, AB, Doubleday
This is a highly regarded Jewish effort, but he sees layers of redaction in the materiel.

Wright, Christopher, NIBC, Hendrickson
This is my favorite commentary on Deuteronomy. I would recommend it to all pastors and teachers.

John's Picks*
    1. Wright - yes, I do think it is that helpful!
    2. Merrill
    3. Craigie and/or Mc Conville
    4. Thompson
*I liked having all 5 to preach this book.

I wanted to mention that Dan Block has finished his Deuteronomy commentary for the NIVAC (which promises to be good and stands at just under 800 pages) and will be published August 2012. Better yet, Dan Block has just signed a contract deal with Eerdmans to publish the FULL notes he made in the making of his commentary for the NIVAC series. This volume (Dan said) would be about 2000 pages when published (I'm pretty sure it will be 3 volumes) in November 2012 (?). It will be well worth considering the larger set if you really want a significant Evangelical reading of Deuteronomy (just see his 2 volume commentary on Ezekiel in the NICOT series). :bounce:

Wow! I had just seen that the commentary had a release date, but the notes - wow!

We will have to see how technical the notes are before we know who can profit from them, but his work on Ezekiel was one on the best commentaries that I have ever used.
