Hi. My wife and I are buying some books for a young Christian in Haiti. So far, we have the Nelson Study Bible NKJV (I think the notes in this are VERY good), Torrey's Topical Textbook, The Zondervan Bible Dictionary, and now are looking to get the best one or (at most) two volume Bible commentary we can.

Your recommendations are very much appreciated.

Although not really a commentary, Zondervin's archological Bible is a great one volume resource. It has many short articles written about the archeological studies that relate to the bible.

For the most part, I am not a huge fan of the one volume commentaries because they leave out far too much. If size is the issue, have you considered getting multiple volumes on an Ebook?

I would recommend
ed Carson, DA et al New Bible Commentary - 21st Century edition, Inter-Varsity Press, P. O. Box 1400, Downers Grove, Illinois
USA ISBN 0 8306 1442 6

Possibly with the companion volume
ed Douglas, JD et al New Bible Dictionary Inter-Varsity Press, P. O. Box 1400, Downers Grove, Illinois,
USA ISBN 0 8308 1441 8

I second Avid's suggestions :D

If you have to choose, then I would suggest the New Bible Dictionary, as it gives a brief synopsis of the books of the Bible anyway, and has everything arranged under topics eg. "Salvation", "God", "Jesus Christ" etc.

It was a book I used constantly when I began to study.

Then as you are able, send him the Tyndale Commentaries so he can build up a library of these very useful, accurate and yet relatively easy-to-use commentaries. Perhaps you could get a group of Christians together who would each send him one of the commentaries.
