John Stott retired from public ministry in July 2007 at the age of 87. His last address before doing so was Our Christian task: becoming like Jesus. A life lived long for God brings a certain clarity of perspective, and here Dr. Stott shares God's primary objective for us.
Dr. Stott opines in his address that the purpose of God for the people of God is that we become like Christ. Simple yet profound. Following is a summary of his splendid message for all whose hope is in Christ. I encourage you to follow the link above and read his entire message. It won't take very long.
The biblical basis for our call to Christlikeness:
- The historical perspective (Romans 8:29)
- The present perspective (2 Corinthians 3:18)
- The eschatological perspective (1 John 3:2)
We are called to be like Christ:
- In his incarnation (Philippians 2:5-8)
- In his service (John 13:3-17)
- In his love (Ephesians 5:2)
- In his patient endurance (1 Peter 2:18-25)
- In his mission (John 20:21)
Practical consequences of our call to Christlikeness:
- Our suffering is part of God's process of making us like Christ
- Our success in evangelism depends on our being like Christ
- God's way to make us like Christ is to fill us with his Spirit
